Godzilla Movie Thematic Taxonomy

Image
Deathiversary is coming up, a household tradition where over the course of 8 days we watch every Godzilla movie as a way of celebrating the fact that I've survived yet another year. I have ambitious plans this year and I've been putting in a lot of effort to make sure everything will be ready, but while I was taking a break, still with Godzilla firmly entrenched in my brain, I found myself playing around with those little tier maker things. You know, this one here:      The original Godzilla  lost its place as automatic first back in 2013 when a national vote figured out what we already knew but had been keeping a secret for a long time, that the actual greatest work of the human species is Godzilla vs. Biollante . Subsequent votes after the release of Shin Godzilla , which, it should be noted, was very new, and opened up an enormous new audience and "resurgence" of interest in the series, found that one to be #1 with Biollante  something like 3rd place was pretty tel

Dragons & Dragons #1: The Missing Missing Dragons Intro

I like the dragons from Dungeons & Dragons, like, a LOT. They're a thing where it's multiple versions of the same base thing with different colors and with each color having its own special properties, there's multiple groups of them with different themes that are roughly comparable, they fill out an alignment chart for the sake of filling out a chart... they're god damned DRAGONS... it's just all the best, most effective, and frankly kind of cheap ways of tickling my brain in that way that never fails to get me obsessed with something.     For a basic run down of like the bare minimum D&D dragons 101 class, and the stuff most are likely to already know, there's 15 main core dragons that anyone knows or cares about unless you're a completely hopeless dork like me. These 15 are neatly split into 3 septs of 5 dragons each based on their color scheme and alignment. You have the 5 evil chromatic dragons, who are red, blue, green, black, and white in

Kong: King of Bytopia

Godzilla vs. Kong  was pretty darn fun. It's a great King Kong movie, and it feels like a pretty fair facsimile of a Godzilla movie as made by Hollywood. Really, if they just changed that god awful SKREEEEEEEEE roar to Godzilla's roar I'd not really have anything to whine about, and the success of all the other elements just makes that one detail stick out like a sore thumb, because aside from that it gets pretty close to feeling like Godzilla, closer even than the Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Of course it's still bonkers and makes some just plain baffling choices, but having weird non-sensical stuff isn't really a turn off for me. Full disclosure, I saw it high, so when it starts off with Kong's alarm clock waking him up and him going through his morning routine to his favorite jams like some fucking 80's teen comedy I literally couldn't stop laughing and THEN it's the god damned TRUMAN SHOW. And that's how the movie STARTS. So yeah it's insane, b
